Charlotte Pines is a Galveston native. She was raised by her single mother in the former Cedar Terrace complex where she and her mother helped care for her adopted younger brother. Her mother worked several jobs including teaching science as a substitute as Ball High School to help support her family. Charlotte’s mother recently passed in 2016. After several years working at various fast food restaurants (including Kentucky Fried Chicken, Popeye’s, McDonald’s, Church’s Chicken, and Burger King), Charlotte now works part-time as a healthcare aid attending to the needs of clients through personal care and housekeeping. Since her mother passed in 2016, she continues to care for her younger brother, who she considers a son, through a combination of subsided housing, healthcare, and food vouchers. Asked her favorite thing about Galveston, she responded that she loves the beach and wishes she could be there more often.
