Bailey Shinn

ABOUT THE SELECTED IMAGE: OUTDOOR EDUCATION | I ended up picking the one of my nine-year-old in the front lawn. She’s in a little portable camping chair. She’s had the footrests set up as well. She had her book in her lap. She’s doing her homework. And I just came out and found her like that. That was where she wanted to do school. She asked, “Can I go and do school in the front yard?” And I said, “Sure.” I came out and she had her whole little set up. It struck me like, this is cool. This is a moment where she’s doing something she would never be doing at 1 pm on a school day and she got to decide for herself where she wanted to learn. She was soaking in the sun. The way that she was sitting right there just put a little bit of a spin on it. A lot of people focus on how hard it was as a negative for kids to be stuck at home, but that was actually a cool experience.

Bailey Shinn

Bailey Shinn is a full-time choir teacher in Galveston ISD and part-time chef instructor at a local shop and cooking school, The Kitchen Chick. She has been a proud Galveston resident for over seven years and looks forward to continuing to grow within the community, alongside her husband (and fellow teacher), Christopher Shinn, and their beautiful children. She feels honored to be a participant in the TWELVE project this year and hopes to shed light on the effect the COVID-19 pandemic had on the daily lives of Galvestonians, while also reflecting on the time it allowed for her own family to slow down and enjoy one another.
